Mpox 2024 Cdc2. Since 2023, an epidemic of a new variant of mpox, known as clade 1b, began in central africa. In the democratic republic of congo (drc), children make up the majority of the 14,000 reported cases and 511 deaths so far in 2024.
As of june 2, 2024, drc reported 7,281 confirmed or suspected cases of mpox in 2024. Even still, officials soon declared it a worldwide public health emergency in july 2022.
